FAQ

The GatorLink Internet dialup service can be used to connect your home computer to the University network and the Internet. Through this service, you can access UF computer accounts, check your email, or access other computers systems.

The Gatorlink dial-up service comes with a flat rate of $5.00 per month as of July 6th, 2006. This provides each user with 3600 minutes (60 hours) of local use.

You may extend your dial-up time by authorizing charges for any use of dial-up within a month that goes beyond your allowed dial-up quota. The charge for additional dial-up minutes is $0.0083 per minute of connection time. Select Dialup Billing under the Modify command to authorize charges for additional dial-up.

In December of 2006, this service will undergo a review for the needs and the cost of recovery it takes in order to make a decision on the continuation of the service.

For further details on the new Dialup policy, please refer to http://www.it.ufl.edu/services/dialup/

Monthly dialup account charges are available by selecting the Modify option on the GatorLink home page, logging in, and selecting Account status, from the modification menu. An itemized dialup listing is available at the GatorLink Dialup Charges and Detail web page.

Until July 5th, 2006 users were able to use the Gatorlink dial-up service free of charge with differing quotes according to their classification. Undergraduate students are allotted 3600 free minutes, Graduate students are allotted 5400 minutes, TEAMS staff members & Faculty members are allotted 7200 minutes.

In order to connect from home, you must have proper Internet communications software configured for GatorLink dialup. This software is normally included in newer versions of Windows and Macintosh systems, including Windows 95/98/Me, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Macintoshes. If you are familiar with how to do this here are some helpful numbers:

Instructions to configure the dialup are located on the UF Software CD. The instructions are also available from the UF Software CD web site at the following links:

Windows 95/98
Windows Me
Windows NT
Windows 2000

For dial up to work you must have your username/i in the corresponding field.

Once your dialup is configured, you may also use "guest" dialup. This service can be useful to initially create your account or modify your account if your free quota is exhausted. To use "guest" dialup, replace the username/i and password with username guest and password guest, and dial up as usual. Your web browser can only access the GatorLink pages.

Additional software for Internet use, such as mail clients and web browsers, is available on the UF Software CD or may be downloaded from the Software Licensing Services web site.

As of June 2001, the GatorLink dialup service (955-0056) consists of a pool of 1,330 modems connected to Cisco communications servers. This pool supports 56.6Kbps v.90 and slower modems.
